While some resort projects and accommodation properties in Barbados are shopping around for investors, the developer of the multi-million dollar Merricks resort is unequivocally stating he has investors waiting already.
That was one of the major announcements of Dave Ames, Chairman of Harlequin Resort and Hotels which is looking to develop the US $300 to $400 million Merricks Resort in St. Philip. He made this announcement at the public discussion meeting held October 6, 2009. Ames who delivered a presentation about his hospitality firm and its presence in other Caribbean destination noted that they are looking to work with residents in the neighboring areas for what is best for the area.
But some Merricks residents disclosed their apprehension about the project and the fact that it could have an impact on their already vulnerable water supply. Some residents suggested that a small water desalination plant be built as a main water source for the resort. Ames was quick to add, “It is not just about the hotel but about the people and we are looking to work with Merricks residents.” He argued that they want both local and government support in the project.
The project is yet to be approved by the Town and Country Planning Office, as indicated by Ames they are eagerly looking to get the project under once that approval has been received.
Ames however explained that the five star resort is slated to bring 1500 jobs, which will be built over a four year period. He also noted that during the construction phase there will be 750 people employed at that time. Even though it was highlighted that during the construction phase there will be some level of dust, noise and other possible short-term inconveniences those will be short-lived and along with the employment opportunities will come small-business opportunities, improved property and beach access and improved utilities.
He also disclosed at the meeting that one of there major aims would be filling the resort once it is built. There are 1, 242 bedroom added to the tourism product of Barbados if or when the project is completed.
