Government to Introduce New Housing Initiative Soon

April 17, 2010

Minister of Housing and Lands Michael Lashley has reiterated Government’s commitment to housing every person in Barbados and one of the latest initiatives will see at least 500 plots of land being sold from as low as $5 a square foot.

The new initiative is primarily targeted at lower income earners, and Lashley has revealed that the programme is going to be launched “very soon,” with key input coming from agencies such as the Barbados water Authority (BWA) and others.

He made the comments during a ceremony to launch a new housing development South View at Kent, Christ Church.

In explaining the $5 lot programme, he said the prospective homeowner would buy a piece of land for $17,000 and would then go to the bank and get their loan or go to the National Housing Corporation (NHC) to get one of its small contractors to construct their house.

He said the Barbados Government has also sought to provide a greater number of housing solutions in the price category from $100,000 – $125,000, and those prices include both housing and lands.

“At the low end of the housing market we have recognized that some Barbadians will not be able to go to a bank and own outright and purchase a house and would not be able to service a mortgage in the long run. So what we have done is introduce the concept of rent to own for people who earn less than $3000 a month and may not qualify for the most spacious houses being built in Barbados,” he explained.

Speaking with reference to the Southview development, Lashley acknowledged that it was an effort to put the spotlight on middle income Barbadians.

“We are proud of the fact this class has grown the most since independence. We now have the largest middle class in the region. This government believes that the middle class is the backbone of this country and take this country on the next stage of development,” he said.
